Job Description

ARU Summer Internship Scheme – Software Developer

Pay rate: £9.50ph
Location: remote working
Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week
Term: 8-12 weeks

Start date: June 2021

Our client, an IT services company serving the health sector by providing rota scheduling software for primary care, is currently seeking to recruit a intern.  The company, grown from an Open University final year project, is now used in several health/medicine organisations in the UK to schedule staff for clinics, GP surgeries and COVID vaccination centres.

The role

The founder of the company is a GP by training with an interest in IT but they now need someone to dedicate their time and unique skillset as a software specialist, to improve and consolidate the software.

There is a need to move from an organic product that has developed in response to consumer demand to a more structured product that can be scaled up.  The current proposition has advertised 60,000 shifts to date and of those, filled 50,000 with 3,000 end users (all approximate figures).

The current (fairly competent) beta-stage software is written in a mix of PHP, a RAD (Scriptcase) and MySQL operating on a VPS and there is a development environment on a separate set-up.  Duties include:

  • Data security and warehousing/back- up options – look at and implement ways to store and offload data from the main database, reviewing algorithms and optimising the code
  • Mobile optimisation – optimise existing end-user experience and then look at an alternate front end to link with mySQL bypassing Scriptcase
  • mySQL optimisation – the algorithms would benefit from optimisation and consideration of ways to improve scalability
  • Feature development – there are some features that have yet to be implemented
  • The successful candidate is expected to develop and test their code independently (with support from the founder)

This role would best suit a current undergraduate student.

Person spec

  • Current student from a relevant degree e.g. Computer Science
  • Suitable home working set up with reliable internet connection and a suitable PC, Linux or Mac computer (pref Mac).
  • Good skills in PHP and mySQL. (Scriptcase is desirable)
  • Able to view problems from multiple perspectives e.g. end-user, rota manager, software developer
  • An enthusiastic self-starter who remains motivated to work even when located remotely
  • Able to work autonomously with initiative/lateral thinking and to multi task
  • Organised and efficient at prioritising own workload.
  • Knowledge of Portuguese is desirable (original Scriptcase docs in Portuguese)
