Job Description

The Faculty of Science and Engineering are seeking to employ several student ambassadors to work on the university Engage program on behalf of the School of Life Sciences. They are looking for suitably motivated individuals who will be able to provide peer support to other students within their school to help them achieve their potential. The commitment will be one hour a week, during term time and sessions will be carried out at a fixed time each week over MS Teams.

Dates: ASAP - 7/5/2021
Times: Variable but will be 1 hour per week
Location: Online
Pay rate: £9.30 per hour

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Before the start of the course:

  • Participate in Engage leader training.
  • Inform students about Engage sessions at the start of the course.

Before Engage sessions:

  • Communicate with Engage staff co-ordinator.
  • Promote your Engage sessions (perhaps via Canvas or through course social media).
  • Prepare Engage sessions by integrating course content with learning strategies using collaborative techniques.

During Engage sessions

  • Register attendance.
  • Offer a positive and easy-going learning environment.
  • Base meeting agenda on participants’ wishes.
  • Facilitate discussions and be supportive of problems: ensure everyone is included by varying how you engage attendees.
  • Maintain clear boundaries and an awareness of other support services within ARU, signposting students as appropriate.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality within the professional role at all times, sharing important information with the Adviser/Co-ordinator.
  • Work collaboratively with the other PAL leader.
  • Give confidence to attendees to ask questions both inside Engage sessions and outside (to lecturers, for example).
  • Summarize the session content efficiently

After Engage sessions

  • Follow up with student after Engage student and get feedback
  • Participate in regular supervision meetings with Engage staff co-ordinator
  • Administer evaluation forms at the last Engage sessions

Person Specification

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. PAL leaders must be eager to share their enthusiasm for the subject with a friendly, non-judgemental attitude and help new students feel relaxed through encouraging them to ask questions and contribute to learning sessions.
  • Confidence speaking in front of small groups of students.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills.
  • Highly reliable, with availability during university term-time.
  • Appreciation for, and sensitivity to, cultural differences.
  • Knowledge of campus resources and support systems.
  • Self‐reflective; ability to help evaluate the program and identify areas for improvement.
  • Proficient with IT and able to use MS Teams for meetings.
  • Strong academic track record in current subject area.
