Job Description

POST TITLE: Summer General Assistant (The Residential Service- Cambridge)

DATES: 7th June - 3rd September 2021

PAY RATE: £10.00 per hr (Free accommodation also included)

PLACE OF WORK: Cambridge

HOURS OF WORK: Full-time. Can be covering seven days a week Monday to Sunday. Staggered starts may sometimes be required

RESPONSIBLE TO: Housing Management Officers (HMO's)

MAIN DUTIES: To be a key member of the summer staff.  Working closely with the  HMO's to ensure smooth running of the summer business and preparation for arrivals September 2021.

  • To carry out tasks (such as cleaning, making beds, stripping beds, hanging curtains) for preparation in the rooms and common areas as allocated by the Housing Management Officers on a regular basis, ensuring customer satisfaction.

  • Be the first point of contact for customers and to assist residents by signposting them to useful services and support agencies.

  • To work to the required standards as per the Residential Service summer handbook and training.

  • Make sure that cleaning agents and equipment are used for the correct purpose and in the correct manner, following COSHH guidelines.

  • Maintain Health and Safety Regulations at all times, including wearing the provided safety equipment. (PPE)

  • Ensure that information regarding standards of work which don’t comply with Summer Business Handbook are passed to the HMO's 

  • Some tasks allocated may involve the removal of refuse and other items to be disposed of including moving furniture and light gardening.

  • To report any defects relating to repairs and maintenance found in work areas to the HMO's.

  • To remove items from one area to another as directed by the HMO's .

  • To undertake all the induction training and to carry out refresher training where necessary.

    • Some heavy lifting may be required and as such manual handling training will be given.

    • Training will be given in COSHH cleaning standards.

  • To assist with fire drills and evacuations, as well as helping to carry out weekly fire alarm tests.

  • To assist with monthly meter read in University accommodation and assist in fire alarm testing.

  • Prepare / turnaround rooms ready for summer business and new arrivals.

  • To partake in the duty and out of hours rota *

  • Comply with data protection requirements in all working practices and maintain confidentiality as necessary.

  • Every member of staff is required to show respect to their colleagues and to understand and adhere to the University’s values; and to support all the teams with which they have contact in achieving the outlined objectives.

  • Keep accurate records of stock, locations and complete asset registers in halls and houses on and off campus

  • Such other duties, as may reasonably be required

Hours worked are according to the Rota, which are compiled according to the needs of the business, for this reason no successful applicant can be allowed any more leave than the two days per week allocated by the Rota.  All hours worked are at the standard rate.

Person appointed must be available from Monday 7th June 2021 until Monday 6th September 2021

*Out of hours – A minimum number of 2 shifts per week must be completed to qualify for the free rent.
