Planning Intern – Essex County Council 

Pay rate: £10.23ph
Location: remote working
Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week 
Term: 8 weeks

Working with the Essex growth agenda, the Planning Service is delivering a more consistent approach and better managing the complexity of relationships across City, District and Borough Councils and developers. Working with key stakeholders the Service will deliver well-balanced good quality development, addressing the housing, economic, infrastructure and environmental needs of communities. 

The role

Supporting the planning policy and development management function of ECC with Essex-wide responsibility, this role will provide the successful candidate with experience of the service area to enhance employability and skills.  There is opportunity to broaden your understanding of working in local government whilst building personal skills and developing a network of contacts. 

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Shadowing senior post holders in order to experience a range of town planning service provision or policy issues affecting ECC.
  • Undertaking any jointly agreed beneficial in-house training.
  • Undertaking any suitable tasks supervised by an ECC employee who has responsibility for their delivery in order to observe and supporting ECC projects.
  • Contributing to the work of the Planning Service in order to increase skills, knowledge and experience.
  • Responsible for proactively maintaining current knowledge of the service/profession e.g. attending meetings, reading appropriate publications or researching websites.
  • Responsible for identifying and discussing learning needs with their mentor/supervisor, and participating in regular reviews.

Person spec

  • Graduate or soon to graduate from a relevant degree
  • Interest in planning and working in local government
  • Excellent analytical and research skills with the ability to quickly establish positive working relationships
  • Confident communicator able to converse with all levels of a business and its partners to present ideas in a persuasive manner
  • Proficient computer user with experience of virtual meeting tools e.g. MS Teams
  • Self-starter able to work autonomously with initiative
  • Organised and efficient at prioritising own workload
