ARU Summer Internship 2022 - Research Intern
Pay rate: £9.90ph
Company: Lau Superconductors (UK) Ltd
Location: Remote working
Hours: Full time (37.5hrs per week)
Duration: 12 weeks
Start Date: June 2022
The job
Cutting edge superconductor research with: a) the construction, physical manipulation, and strength testing of copper wire solenoids and b) if a) is successful, computer modelling to extend theoretically test results to using superconductors in outer space.
Project deliverables:
- The capacity independently to generate research results which have practical commercial use
- The ability to extend and translate simple laboratory experiments into proof-of-concept benchmarks for commercial funding
- Corporate level research publication
Person spec
- Current ARU student from a relevant course e.g. Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Familiar with laboratory electrical systems including bench power supplies, current/voltage/resistance measurement, electric wiring (experience with solenoids and solenoid winding would be a plus)
- Familiar with laboratory weight measurement
- Familiar with computer modelling and simulation of electrical / magnetic systems
- Discipline and maturity to self-motivate and achieve goals independently with minimal remote supervision
- Entrepreneurial willingness to do a multitude of tasks including sourcing materials and equipment, accounting, etc. with available resources
Open and creative mind to solve practical problems which will inevitably arise
Learning outcomes
By the end of this internship the successful intern should be able to demonstrate:
- Experience working with an entrepreneurial start-up for future career decisions
- Communicating results in an in-house publication which may become part of a published paper in the future
- Overcoming practical challenges which will arise with cutting edge experiments that have never been done before
