Job Description

We are looking for students who are passionate about ARU addressing sexual misconduct, and who want to provide consultancy with the Independent Sexual Violence Advocacy (ISVA) team to bring student voices to the forefront of systemic change.

Dates: September 2022 until August 2023
Times: To be agreed but will be 2 hours per week.
Pay rate: £10.41 per hour
Location: Cambridge Campus or online for Chelmsford

We cannot make meaningful change without listening to what students want and need from their university; therefore, we would value your expert consultancy on our policies, procedures, strategies, support services and campaigns as Student Sexual Violence Consultants (SSVCs).

As part of ARU’s commitment to tackling sexual violence and rape culture, the ISVA team will be facilitating student trainings to the wider ARU community on Sexual Violence, and we want input from the SSVCs to help create engaging content for student trainings. The trainings will cover sexual violence, consent, bystander intervention, and what support/reporting options are available at ARU. The purpose of the trainings are to set a tone where students at ARU know that we take sexual misconduct seriously, that all victims/survivors deserve support, and that we have disciplinary processes in place to hold perpetrators to account should victims/survivors wish to report.

As SSVCs, your duties would consist of:
  • A monthly 2-hour consultancy meeting with the other SSVCs facilitated by the ISVA team
  • Assisting the ISVA team to create engaging content for student trainings
  • Review and feedback on support, disciplinary procedures and policies to ensure ARU delivers the best support for victim/survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable
  • Contributing to safe campaigns that shift the focus from victim blaming

All SSVCs will be required to attend training on sexual violence, rape myths, and ARU’s values. All students will be eligible for emotional support if they would like this.

If you are a student at ARU and you are passionate about this topic, then we want to hear from you!

Please note that this is not a student facing role. The training you receive as part of this role will not qualify you to provide support to victim/survivors of sexual violence, but will be intended to provide a wider context of sexual violence, rape myths, and ARU’s response

The ISVA team works in conjunction with Cambridge Rape Crisis Centre, a local intersectional feminist specialist service who support victims/survivors. ARU now has an Independent Sexual Violence Advocacy service, a Sexual Violence Project Manager, and a specialist Sexual Misconduct Investigator.

We particularly encourage applications from LGBTQIA+ community, and from students who are Black and Global Majority. We will work with students to be actively anti-racist and challenge all forms of discrimination.

Requirements
  • Being a current ARU Student
  • Empathy/Kindness
  • A desire to tackle sexual violence at ARU
  • Resiliency
  • Ability to problem solve
  • An understanding of rape myths and the impacts they have on victims/survivors
  • Willing to attend SSVC training
  • A passion for social justice (trans inclusion, anti-racism, women’s rights)
  • Able to demonstrate commitment to these values
  • Able to work and collaborate with colleagues in a team
  • Able to be patient, empathetic and understanding without passing judgement
If you are interested in this role, please apply online with an up to date CV and answer the following questions:
  1. What do you think ARU should be doing to tackle rape culture?
  2. How would you like to  contribute to ARU improving it’s response to sexual violence?

(max 500 words)
