ARU Employability Service is hiring new Undergraduate Student Employability Activators from the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, to join our friendly team.

 

What is a Student Employability Activator?

  • Activators are specialist student ambassadors working within ARU’s Employability Service! They receive employability focused training.
  • They are dedicated to promoting to their peers our valuable ARU Employability Service messages, services, resources, and events.
  • By sharing their own experiences, Activators emphasise the importance of developing key employability skills to all other ARU students.
  • They actively encourage their peers to prepare for future careers, goals, or further education opportunities during their time at ARU.
  • Additionally, they collaborate closely with the ARU Employability Service team to ensure our messaging, promotions and events are successful.

Duties include:

  • Working in a friendly team of approximately 20 students, alongside Employability Service staff, to support our online and in-person initiatives.
  • Promoting, attending and supporting key virtual/face to face events and initiatives that support the development of lifelong career management skills among students.
  • Talking to students in your faculty, societies and other networks about employability, placements, and the support available from ARU’s Employability Service – encourage other students to get involved!
  • Attending Activator team meetings and brainstorming sessions to provide your ideas and feedback regarding improvements to the service.
  • Providing frontline support to students following training from qualified Advisers. This may include running information stands and drop-in sessions on campus.
  • Generating content for ARU Employability social media channels focused on employability, placements and enterprise.
  • Other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis will be identified based on Employability Service needs.

Qualifications

Skills and experience:

  • Understanding of the importance of ‘employability’ and what ‘employability skills’ are.
  • Great communicator – Activators need to be highly responsive to contact from the ARU Employability Service and other students.
  • Confidence in meeting new people and chatting about your course and your extracurricular activities.
  • It’s essential that you have an interest in social media and willingness to create and appear in social media videos, photos and other content to promote the ARU Employability Service.
  • Professional, organised, and reliable – Activators sign up for shifts on a flexible basis, so they need strong time management skills.
  • Familiarity with the online ARU Career Centre and Handshake platforms is essential.
  • Students that are planning or have completed a placement are particularly encouraged to apply.

Benefits

Training and development: If you are successfully selected to be an Activator, you will receive Activator training on how to complete your role, as well as training on Employability Service key resources and initiatives.

 

Pay and conditions: The Activator roles will mostly require you to complete paid work tasks, however there will also be optional unpaid tasks for you to complete should you wish.

  • Paid work – work you do on behalf of the Employability Service to promote the service offering to other students, and other relevant work tasks as requested by the Employability Service.
  • Unpaid work – optional tasks that you complete to benefit your own personal or professional development. For example, attending optional sessions focused on your own self-development.

The paid elements of the role are paid at the Student Ambassador rate of £12 p/hour. You will submit a timesheet each week depending on the time you have dedicated to the role

 

Work hours: Work hours are varied, from approximately 1 hour per week up to 12 hours per week during busy periods (for example, Futures Festival) on a flexible basis. Activators sign up for work tasks via a group MS Teams chat and are responsible for picking up shifts and managing their own work hours.

The role is available throughout the academic year on a rolling one-month contract basis and may be renewed year on year based on your performance.
