The role
As a Software Engineer Intern at Reneural, you will play a key role in the development and enhancement of our innovative product, designed to support stroke recovery through game-based VR technology. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers, designers, and business professionals, gaining hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment, threading together new technology to enhance recovery rate/time and improve quality of life. Responsibilities include:
Software Development & Product Enhancement
- Contribute to the development and refinement of our game based VR application, working through all stages of project development.
- Assist in coding, debugging, and testing software to improve product functionality and user experience.
- Support the integration of new features and updates to enhance stroke patient rehabilitation outcomes.
Collaboration & Agile Development
- Work closely with the development team to bring the product to commercial release.
- Participate in daily stand-up meetings with both the business and development teams, providing input on product direction and technical decision-making.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to align technical solutions with business objectives.
Project Management & Documentation
- Assist in documenting project plans and monitoring project performance, ensuring alignment with development timelines.
- Regularly update project progress, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to effective communication across teams.
Innovation & Creative Problem-Solving
- Leverage your technical skills to deliver software improvements and contribute to Reneural’s intellectual property (IP).
- Share insights and innovative ideas to shape product development, including software design, user experience, and business strategy.
This role is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated software engineering student to gain hands-on experience in VR technology, game-based rehabilitation, and healthcare innovation. You’ll work on a real-world project with a meaningful impact, while expanding your technical expertise and contributing to a cutting-edge startup.
Person spec
ESSENTIAL
- Current ARU undergraduate student from a relevant degree course e.g. Computer Science, Computer Games Programming or Design, Games Development
- A passion for healthcare, virtual or augmented reality and who enjoys rapid iterative development for products or research.
- Familiarity with the game engine Unity
- Skilled in the languages C#/C++ or familiarity with other OOP programming languages
- Knowledgeable of standard OOP practices
- Familiar with using source control (github, source tree etc)
- Able to demonstrate initiative, high-quality output and excellent communication skills
- Capability to work on the project individually and collaborate with our development and business teams throughout all phases of the development timeline.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Someone self-motivated, entrepreneurial, enjoys research and is eager to learn new skills.
- Portfolio showcasing relevant experience
- Evidence of working in a team project
DESIRABLE:
- Understanding of game design elements
- Previous professional experience in VR, simulation, visualisation or a creative industry (e.g. Video games, Film VFX).
- Experience in gameplay systems
- Knowledge of cloud-based systems e.g. Azure, SQL
- Understanding of UI design for Mobile app development

At the end of the internship the successful intern should be able to demonstrate:
- The candidate can expect to learn vital skills working in a fast paced and ever evolving company, giving them the opportunity to learn soft skills such as oral and written communications, critical thinking, problem solving and time management.
- Alongside this, the candidate can expect to learn important hardskills that come with the role as a Software engineer, including coding architecture planning, core programming skills and working with the team in developing improvements to our Bluetooth, network and cloud based communications
