Hours: 37 hours per week

Pay Rate: £12.60/hour 

Start date: May/June 2025

Smartbell, is a Cambridge-based animal health company developing advanced livestock management solutions. Their flagship product, WellCalf, is a IoT-based digital assistant that uses wearable sensors to monitor calf health, tracking temperature, movement, and behaviour. This data is analysed to detect early signs of illness, allowing farmers to intervene quickly and improve animal welfare. Smartbell has a growing team, primarily composed of technical professionals specialising in engineering, data science, and AI-driven solutions and operations team managing business development, marketing, supply chain and logistics

Brief job description/responsibilities 

Working with the Smartbell software and data science team to implement and improve data insights solutions for animal health. 

  • The role will involve:Technical development, testing and deployment activities across the various components of the product which can cover a wide area from wearable device to cloud software.
  • Build and setup of edge servers, this can involve unix programming, shell scripting and standalone python programming.
  • Develop software for the data pipeline, microservices for the application and the observability and automation services.
  • Be involved in proof-of-concept development and prototyping for upcoming new features and products.
  •  Working collaboratively with the wider cross functional team.

 Required skills/qualifications  

  • A current student from a relevant course such as Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Computing. Students from Electronics engineering, Biomedical engineering, mechantronis/robotics and similar disciplines with a keen interest in programming will be considered.
  • Working knowledge of Unix systems and shell scripting.
  • Strong python programming.
  • Good communication skills are essential.
  • The right candidate will have a can-do attitude, eager to learn from a multi-disciplinary team and a willingness to roll up the sleeves and get projects to completion.
