Title: Paramedic Science - Graduate Clinical Skills Tutor

Role Purpose: The Graduate Clinical Skills Tutor (GCSTs) will support the delivery of high-quality
teaching and learning within the Paramedic Science programme, with a particular
focus on practical and clinical skills development. This role provides an
opportunity for newly qualified graduates to gain academic and teaching
experience in a supportive environment, complementing their transition into
practice.

This post is intended as a developmental role for graduates and is expected to be
for a period of two years or until completion of the Newly Qualified Paramedic
(NQP) period, whichever comes first. At the end of this period, the postholder may
be considered for continued employment or may apply for an Associate Lecturer
position, subject to business need, available budget, and the skills and experience
demonstrated. Successful employment as an Associate Lecturer is not automatic
or guaranteed.
Main Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning Support
- Deliver practical teaching sessions, tutorials, and workshops in clinical
skills and simulation environments under the guidance of academic staff.
- Promote inclusive teaching practices, adapting delivery methods and
support to meet the diverse needs of learners.
- Assist in the design, preparation, and delivery of skills-based teaching
materials and resources.
- Support students in developing clinical competence, professional
behaviours, and reflective practice.
- Provide formative feedback to students on their skills performance,
maintaining appropriate records in line with university requirements.
Assessment
- Assist in marking and moderating formative assessments where
appropriate.
- Contribute to skills assessments, including Objective Structured Clinical
Examinations (OSCEs), under supervision of level four students only.
Student Support
- Act as a point of contact for students requiring guidance and support with
clinical skills practice.
- Provide academic support sessions to reinforce key skills and address
learning needs, ensuring students from all backgrounds feel able to
succeed.
Professional practice & Development
- Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills, aligned with HCPC
requirements for paramedic practice.
- Undertake training and development opportunities in teaching, learning,
and assessment provided by the university.
- Reflect on own teaching practice, demonstrating ARU’s values of
innovation, collaboration, and integrity.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within the school.
Teamwork & Administration
- Work collaboratively with lecturers, associate lecturers, and clinical
demonstrators to ensure delivery of a high-quality and inclusive student
experience.
- Contribute to curriculum development discussions where relevant to
clinical skills.
- Support the organisation and smooth running of practical teaching
sessions, including equipment set-up and safe use of simulation resources.
- Undertake administrative tasks associated with teaching as required (e.g.,
attendance monitoring, record keeping).
What are the team looking for?
Essential
- Recent graduate from ARU BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science programme,
recognised as a Newly Qualified Paramedic (NQP).
- Registration (or eligibility for registration) with the HCPC as a Paramedic.
- Be able to sign up to ARU Temps, which includes providing photo identity
and evidence of your right to work. Evidence of strong clinical skills and knowledge of current paramedic
practice.
- Commitment to inclusive practice and the promotion of equality and
diversity in teaching.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage
students from a wide range of backgrounds.
- Willingness to undertake training in teaching and assessment.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Desirable
- Previous experience supporting peers, students, or others in a teaching,
mentoring, or supervisory capacity including the Student Skills Tutor (SST)
role.
- Demonstrated interest in education and developing a career in higher
education.
- Awareness of educational technologies and simulation in healthcare
teaching.
Further Notes: At the end of the individuals NQP period, the graduate may continue in the
role, or apply for an Associate Lecturer position. Continuation in the role or
transition to Associate Lecturer role is not automatic and will depend on
departmental need, budget availability, and the skills and experience
demonstrated.
