Job Description

Job Title: Research Assistant
 
Research Project: “Nothing about us without us"

Location: ARU Cambridge
 
Proposed Start Date: Thursday 31st October
 
Proposed End Date: Friday 20th December
 
Hours: 8hrs per week
 
Rate of Pay: £22.94ph
 
Duties: This is a part-time postdoctoral research assistant role for a Medical Research Council funded project: “Nothing about us without us’: Investigating the impact of the leadership of ethnic minority women on domestic abuse service provision in East England”.

The project is led by Dr Mirna Guha, Senior Lecturer in Sociology (ARU Cambridge) and co-led by Dr Katherine Allen from the University of Suffolk. The RA will be required to liaise with both researchers (online) and visit ARU Cambridge in person for some in-person activities in November.

The main responsibilities of the candidate will be around three key areas:

  1. Support research team with organisation and implementation of 4-5 online and in-person leadership sessions on domestic abuse prevention. Responsibilities will include liaising with facilitators, participants and writing up a report documenting insights from the sessions
  2. Contribute to planning and preparation for impact evaluation of two specialist services for Asian victims of domestic abuse in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. This will include support with designing and disseminating surveys, visiting partner organisations to conduct focus group discussions, and managing sensitive and confidential data.
  3. Contribution to data analysis and write-up of findings for reports and briefs. Potential further involvement as co-author for a journal article.

Requirements:

  • For this role, the candidate needs PhD level experience in social research methods and analysis (particularly in sensitive topics) 
  • Subject knowledge regarding domestic abuse vulnerabilities of Black and racialised women
  • Some knowledge of the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) sector in the UK, and intersectional feminist frameworks. Candidates close to thesis submission can apply.

The RA will be hired initially until Christmas break. Based on performance, this appointment will be extended for a further 3-4 few months in 2025.
