Internship TitleExploring Disability and Diversity in Land-Based Education
Start Date: March 2026
Duration: 6 weeks
Location: Writtle or remote 
Hours: 20 hours per week (the schedule will be discussed with your manager)
Rate of pay: £13.45 per hour  

Brief Job Description/Responsibilities
This project aims to explore the representation, intersectionality and success outcomes of students who declare a disability within land-based higher education in the UK, using national-level student data from HESA.

The role will involve:
• Undertaking a literature review to improve understanding of disabilities and diversity within land-based education. Data from Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) indicates that land-based education programmes consistently report a higher-than-average proportion of students with declared disabilities, with 23.4% of students reporting a disability in the 2023/24 academic year—substantially higher than the sector-wide average of 17.7%.
• Assisting with the analysis of data which is made available by HESA
 
Required skills/qualifications
Good written and verbal communication skills
• Basic knowledge of literature review
• Good data analytical skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
• Enthusiasm for supporting diversity and inclusion in higher education
 
Must be a current ARU student 
Outcomes
1. Learning outcomes

At the end of the internship the student will be able to demonstrate:
• Understanding of the literature related to diversity and disabilities in land-based education
• Advance data analytical skills using R or SPSS
• Improve interpersonal and collaboration skills
2. Project deliverables
Literature review: a well-written review that improves our understanding of disabilities and diversity within land-based education
• Results: consisting of carefully analysed data with relevant description.
• Progress report: A report documenting the progress of the research activities, summarising completed tasks, challenges faced, and the next steps required to complete the research project
