About the Opportunity

*This opportunity is open to current ARU undergraduate students only*

Are you passionate about helping young people to see their potential and aspire to higher education? Do you want to develop your project, presentation and outreach skills while making a real difference in your local community?

This exciting Make Happen Outreach Intern role offers the chance to gain hands-on experience planning and delivering meaningful activities to support Year 9–10 students—specifically white working‑class boys from low progression neighbourhoods—to explore education pathways and build confidence in their ability to progress to university.

As part of ARU’s widening participation work, you’ll play a vital role in improving perceptions of higher education and supporting students who may not otherwise consider university as an option.

You will join a supportive team, work closely with schools and young people, and contribute to a progressive outreach project that includes in-school sessions and a large on-campus event.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Make Happen Outreach Intern, you will:

  • Support the organisation and delivery of two in-school sessions per partner school and one major on-campus outreach event.
  • Deliver workshops and presentations designed to offer education and career guidance to underrepresented students.
  • Help create engaging workshop and event materials for Make Happen and ARU outreach programmes.
  • Monitor and track a small project budget.
  • Collect and process evaluation data to measure impact.
  • Build relationships with local schools/colleges and assist with their outreach activities.
  • Undertake training in ARU and Make Happen safeguarding processes.

This role offers a fantastic introduction to outreach, education, project work, and youth engagement—ideal experience for careers in education, widening participation, events, youth work, or community engagement.

What We’re Looking For

You’ll be a great fit if you have:

  • A genuine interest in supporting young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience delivering or supporting education projects, events, or activities.
  • Confidence in presenting and public speaking.
  • Excellent organisation and time‑management skills.
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

What You’ll Gain

By the end of the internship, you will have developed:

  • Strong project planning, event planning and delivery skills.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding processes when working with young people.
  • Experience managing and monitoring a small budget.
  • Increased confidence in presenting to groups of students.
  • Professional relationships across ARU and partner schools/colleges.
  • Experience gathering and analysing evaluation data using Excel, and creating reports.

You will also deliver a final presentation on the outcomes of your internship and how it has developed your employability skills.

Ready to Make a Difference?

If you're enthusiastic, motivated, and eager to support young people to explore their future pathways, we’d love to receive your application.

Apply today with your CV and cover letter.
