Job Description

Are you interested in supporting your fellow students with their learning?

We are recruiting for Student Assistants for Learning and Teaching  (SALTs) for our exciting Ruskin Modules.

Ruskin Modules bring students together from across ARU to find new ways to tackle ‘wicked’ challenges – global societal or cultural concerns that are uniquely difficult to resolve.

These interdisciplinary modules enable students to develop new skills and refine further existing ones. Skills such as critical reflection, reasoned argument, and the confidence to question established ways, will prepare students for the future and provide an additional edge in the workplace.

Whilst supporting online learning as a Ruskin Module SALT, you’ll experience something exciting and new, and increase your own skills alongside the students on the module.  You’ll also benefit from additional Ruskin Module training and ongoing support.

You’ll need to be: Proactive, organised, friendly and open to new ideas

Location: Remote work - Online

Rate of pay: £12.60 p/h

Start date: September 2025

Duration: Up to 12 weeks in trimester 1

Hours: 2 – 6 hours per week

Days: Primarily Wednesday mornings OR you might be allocated set dates during trimester 1

As a SALT you will be required to:
  • Acting as an extra pair of eyes and ears to the Module Leader, providing them with feedback and updates.
  • Supporting effective learning in online Teams classrooms.
  • Assisting in managing the Teams environment and its functions
  • Supporting out of class online discussions in Canvas.
  • Monitoring and encouraging student engagement and collaboration, for example in online breakout rooms.

Benefits of being a SALT:

  • Full training will be provided and you will be paid for training time.
  • Being a Ruskin Module SALT is an opportunity to be involved in something completely different, these modules are not like anything at ARU! Explore the exciting Ruskin Modules running next trimester here.
  • Personal development - you will experience interdisciplinary working and develop new skills alongside the students taking the module.
  • Opportunity to develop your Digital Literacy skills

Requirements:

  • Must be a ARU Student, 3rd year or above or ARU Graduate
  • All course disciplines are welcome
  • Available Wednesday mornings for trimester 1

If you are interested in this work:

Please click on the apply button, you’ll be asked to upload your CV. If you are keen to work on a specific Ruskin Module, please mention this in your application.

What happens next?

  • Once you’ve sent in your application, we’ll be back in touch to let you know if you have been shortlisted for the role.
  • If you have been shortlisted, we’ll ask you to check your 2025/26 timetable as soon as it is released for Wednesday mornings in trimester 1, as this is when most Ruskin Module teaching takes place.
  • If you are recruited to the role of SALT, you will be asked to complete an online training course to make sure you have the knowledge and skills to fulfil the role.
  • We will introduce you to the Module Leader that you will be working with, so they can tell you more about the module and brief you on what they’d like you to do.
