Location: Writtle Campus

Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with some weekend duties required as appropriate to establish and maintain plant populations

Rate of Pay: £13.84 per hour

Contract Duration: Fixed-term

Proposed Start Date: 04 May 2026

About the Role:

We are seeking a Horticultural Research Technician to support plant-based trials at our Writtle Campus. This temporary, hands-on role focuses on the maintenance of trial plant populations within glasshouse environments, with some potential fieldwork as required. The postholder will also play an important role in supporting postgraduate taught (PGT) students throughout their trial periods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing, maintaining, and monitoring trial plant populations within the glasshouse
  • Supporting the understanding and implementation of trial protocols
  • Operating and monitoring technical climate-control equipment associated with glasshouse facilities
  • Liaising with Masters-level (PGT) students regarding trial protocols and experimental requirements
  • Providing advice and guidance to students as required throughout the trial period
  • Maintaining clear and effective communication with PGT students
  • Assisting with fieldwork activities where appropriate
  • Ensuring accurate records are maintained and health and safety procedures are followed

Training and Development:

Training will be provided and will include the operation of technical equipment linked to the glasshouse, including climate-control systems and associated technologies.

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working with plants, preferably in a glasshouse or controlled-environment setting
  • An understanding of horticultural or research trial protocols (or willingness to learn)
  • Ability to work confidently with technical equipment following training
  • Strong communication skills, particularly when working with postgraduate students
  • Good organisational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Flexibility to undertake occasional weekend duties when required
