Job Description

Internship Title: Establishing Positive Role Models – Developing a community of practice across the school of Engineering and the Built Environment (EBE) to support black students reach higher achievement.
 
Proposed Start Date: ASAP
 
Duration: 10 weeks
 
Hours: 20hrs per week
 
Rate of pay: £12.60ph
 
Location: Chelmsford
 
Duties:
  • Supporting Faculty Science & Engineering Student Outcomes Tutor in Establishing Positive Role Models programme across the school of Engineering and the Built Environment (EBE), to support black students reach higher achievement.
  • Promoting the project to UG and PGT EBE Black students (mentees) and increasing voluntary participation via phone calls to students in selected course(s).
  • Creating an informal ‘living room’ online space where mentees voluntarily join fortnightly to discuss issues pertaining to their student experience, academic struggles and academic successes.
    • This will progress to meet f-2-f once the community is established and feels comfortable to do so.
  • Supporting mentees to establish and accomplish aspirational academic goals, with a specific focus on growth mindset (how to overcome challenges faced), providing lessons learnt and advice to other students in FSE.
  • Supporting and encouraging the professional development of the mentees and providing guidance to help them achieve their goals.
  • Providing mentees with honest and effective feedback through discussion that helps them grow personally and professionally.
  • Developing resources to support the sessions.
  • Encouraging mentees to complete a survey at the end of the project to understand how the role model intervention strategy influenced their behaviour to aspire for higher academic achievement.
  • Connecting with aspirational role models (alumni or professionals) to share their experiences with the group.
Requirements:
  • Studying at Level 6 or 7 from any course in any Faculty at Chelmsford campus*.
  • Be able to demonstrate good or excellent academic performance.
  • Be able to work flexibly and meet agreed deadlines for assigned projects.
  • Be confident working with different student groups
  • Be able to communicate efficiently and with empathy with students involved in the project.
  • Be a good listener, flexible, and non-judgmental.
Learning Outcomes: At the end of the internship the student will be able to demonstrate,
  • Commitment to helping students succeed.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback.
  • Ability to organise and plan sessions
  • Analysis of quantitative/qualitative data from surveys (evaluating the success of the programme).
Project Deliverables:
  • Positive role models programme delivered
  • Report which analyses the impact of establishing positive role models on student success with recommendations for improvement/additional impact.  
  • Range of resources developed to support role models programme.
