ARU Summer Internship Scheme 2025: Built Environment/Planning Intern – Climate Change

Pay rate: £12.60 per hour
Location: Remote
Hours: 37 hour per week
Term: 10 weeks

The Climate and Planning Unit (CaPU) is a small team of policy and technical experts who sit within the Planning & Sustainable Development Service at Essex County Council.  The unit supports local Essex authorities produce Net Zero Carbon and Energy planning policies to guide new build development in Essex and provides advice on planning application consultations for strategic development.  The unit also carries out innovative research into key emerging climate change related impacts for the built environment. 

The role

The role will provide the opportunity to work with industry experts and actively encourage participation in networks in respect of climate action, to influence as well as exchange and produce best practice ideas. Duties include:
  • Undertaking research and analysis to provide evidence-based advice on strategy and climate related policy options to inform decision-makers. 
  • Delivering high quality project work across a wide variety of climate related policy areas, and presenting that work in a way that is tailored to specific audiences.
  • Drawing on the widest range of quantitative and qualitative data to identify specific challenges and propose built environment and climate policy solutions to a range of policy challenges.
  • Collaborating with policy and technical specialist teams across the Council to develop strategy and policy areas.
  • Supporting key partnership meetings and events.
Person spec
  • Current ARU student from a relevant undergraduate course such as Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering with related Net Zero/sustainability modules.
  • A keen interest in any of our key areas: Low carbon buildings, energy efficiency and renewables, water conservation, building techniques, construction practice, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and wider sustainability measures in the built environment.
  • Experience of working with IT systems including Microsoft Office, and a willingness to learn new systems.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the internship the successful intern should be able to demonstrate:
  1. A practical understanding of the impacts of delivering policy to mitigate the effects of climate change and provide wider benefits for people and place.
  2. An appreciation of Operational Energy and Embodied Carbon and their roles in delivering Net Zero Buildings
  3. Delivering research and focussed evidence that informs decision makers on delivering local policy for the public sector.
