ARU Summer Internship Scheme 2025: Public Health Support Officer - Early Years Nutrition

Company name: Essex County Council (ECC) – Public Health
Pay rate: £12.60 per hour
Location: Remote
Hours: 37 hour per week
Term: 10 weeks
Start date: May/June

ECC Public Health contain the statutory responsibility for public health. Our functions include commissioning, stakeholder and resident engagement, programme management, etc. A priority of ECC Public Health is healthy weight, and within this a priority is placed on the early years and children and young people. 

ECC Public Health are working in partnership with ARU on a joint project titled ‘Nourishing Our Future’ where between April 2025 and March 2026 ECC and ARU will be working with the local early years sector to improve the food and nutrition provision of local settings. 

The role
  • Documenting project plans
  • Monitoring project performance against project plans, updating and communicating progress effectively.
  • Supporting the development of the Essex early years network e.g. organising meetings, developing key documents and sending communications. 
  • Support the development of key resources for the local early years settings and further NOF research.  
Person spec
  • Current ARU student from a relevant undergraduate course such as Public Health, Nutrition, or Early Years 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good partnership and relationship skills 
  • Proactive and reliable 
  • Competent with Excel, Outlook, MS Teams, and Word 
  • Previous experience using Canva (desirable)
  • Knowledge and/or experience of nutrition (desirable)
Learning outcomes
At the end of the internship the successful intern should be able to demonstrate:
  1. Supporting the implementation of the Nourishing Our Future research. 
  2. Supporting the development of the Essex early years network. 
  3. Improving knowledge and understanding of the public health potential of the early years settings.
