ARU Summer Internship Scheme 2025: Planning and Public Health Intern

Pay rate: £12.60 per hour
Location: Remote
Hours: 37 hour per week
Term: 10 weeks
Start date: June

The Spatial Planning and Wellbeing, Public Health and Communities Team work together as complementary activities across Essex to promote and innovate the delivery of a shared strategic programme that shapes improvements to best practice and links planning with public health, promoting better outcomes across both disciples. 

The role
The role will provide the opportunity to work in an evolving space with planners and public health officers, focusing on addressing the wider determinants of health in planning processes to ensure future development results in high-quality outcomes. Duties include:
  • Undertaking research and analysis to provide evidence-based advice on climate and health-related policy options to inform decision-makers.
  • Identifying policy interventions that support net zero and health objectives. 
  • Supporting the delivery of high-quality project work across a wide variety of policy areas and presenting that work in a way that is tailored to specific audiences.
  • Drawing a wide range of quantitative and qualitative data to identify specific challenges and propose solutions to a range of policy challenges.
  • Supporting key partnership meetings and events.
Person spec
  • Current ARU student from a relevant undergraduate course such as Public Health.
  • A keen interest in any of our key areas: public health, health and wellbeing, health inequalities, climate change mitigation and adaptation, wider determinants of health, built environment, sustainability.
  • Experience of working with IT systems including Microsoft Office, and willingness to learn new systems.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the internship the successful intern should be able to demonstrate:
  1. A practical understanding of the impacts of delivering policy to mitigate the effects of climate change and provide wider benefits for people and places.
  2. The ability to deliver research and focussed evidence that informs decision-makers on delivering local policy for the public sector.
  3. Experience in addressing and embedding the wider determinants of health in planning processes to ensure positive population health outcomes. 
  4. Gain an understanding of the link between health and the built environment.
